Celebrating the life of

Michael Natale Sottile

October 28, 1936 - March 08, 2025

Michael Natale Sottile

Michael Natale Sottile was the patriarch of the Sottile family of Savannah. His very essence was defined by Faith and Reason. He was a lifelong learner, leader, husband, father, founder, and friend to so many.

He entered this world in 1936 and his vigorous life spanned nearly 90 years. Of Sicilian heritage, both of his parents were born in Castelbuono, Sicily. This heritage created a lifetime traversing between the United States and Italy, from New York, to St Augustine, Savannah, Castelbuono, and Florence, Italy.

He dedicated his life to the pursuit of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. He sought to create magic and believed in the role of leisure as the basis of culture.  He joyfully centered his energies on designing lifestyle, meaningful conversation, continuously teaching and learning, writing, challenging, and communicating with the world.

His love for Holy Mother Church was formed early and developed throughout his lifetime. He saw family as the true foundation of society and aspired to its highest expression in the pursuit of dynasty. The family that he formed now includes 25 immediate relatives, including his beloved wife, Valerie, his soul mate of 54 years, and their six children, their spouses, and their children and grandchildren.

Michael Natale Sottile was truly defined by both faith and reason, grounded in the eternal truths of Holy Mother Church. His soul is on its way to its ultimate reward.

GUEST BOOK

To the Sottile Family, I am genuinely sorry for your loss and heaven's gain. We were in Italy for his son Chris' wedding and I vividly remember sitting next to him on the bus from Empoli, Italy and enjoying a wonderful conversation with him. He kept me astounded with his knowledge and crackling wit. He was a very special person. We will all miss him, but the Good Lord will certainly welcome him home. Maybe he will say hello to my dear mom and dad! In deepest sympathy, Nancy Schreck

What an amazing man!! I so enjoyed his visits to my office. He challenged me in my thoughts, my ideas on religion, my reading pursuits, and my goals in this life and beyond!!! He shared with me his ideas and achievements on family dinners. How that time should be used as an enriching gathering. I asked for and received a required reading list from Mr. Sotile --Wow!! I was astonished and greatly embarrassed that I had not read many of the list!! Just look at his family --An Amazing Success!!Thoughts and love go to all of you !! ( I would say ya'll but Mr. Sotile would not approve !!) Much Love--Gerald Benson

Michael & Valerie are the 2 oldest friends I have here. They first knocked on the door at #11 w Gordon St to deliver soup to their friend Angela recovering from a hip replacement. Such kind neighborliness is a part of their ethos of service to the community. When I needed help I could count on them. Classiness in everything. God’s ministering angels attend Michael in his journey to his reward.

I am a seasonal neighbor of Mr.Sottile, around the corner on Jones St. I visited his shop on many occasions. After one visit, he invited my husband and I to come upstairs to his home to see some artwork. He spoke passionately about the art, and lovingly of his family as he showed us around. If I came to the shop and was instructed by sign to “ring the bell”, he would always come smiling down the stairs, apologize for keeping me waiting, and explain that he had just stepped away “for a cookie”. Such a lovely gentleman. When I saw the horse drawn carriage carry him by, this final time, I thought he leaves as beautifully as he lived. My condolences to his family. He’ll be missed.

0ne of the most interesting, intelligent and kind individuals I ever knew in my 50 plus years in Savannah. We were next-door neighbors on Taylor Street where Mr Sottile always encouraged me in gardening there. He was magical as a family man and patriarch.
